By Andrew Hanelly Not too long ago, I presented a talk at an Association Media & Publishing Lunch & Learn on the future of websites. At the event, I purposely avoided making a grand declaration about the future of the web and instead focused on how associations can stay relevant online. Here are five ways to future-proof your website:
1. Make it Simple
-
Boil down your association's core offering and avoid a crowded, cluttered homepage.
-
Conduct a 5-second usability test.
-
Conduct a homepage audit.
-
Use focus groups, surveys, data analysis.
2. Make it Portable
-
Check analytics to see percent breakdown of your users.
-
Replace Flash elements with HTML or JavaScript.
-
Create strategy first for mobile friendly then mobile app (if necessary).
3. Make it Fast
4. Make it Human
-
Social media should be a layer, not a silo.
-
Show the human side of your organization.
-
Take inventory of your outposts.
-
Investigate where your audience socializes online.
5. Make it Interesting
-
Content on your site can be your longest lasting asset.
-
Take inventory of potential sources of content.
-
Find assets that can be shared in multiple formats.
What steps are you taking to make your organization's website future-proof?
