I was working on an article for Signature recently, and I asked the featured association's editor if she would send me one of her favorite magazine covers to pass along to our designer for the layout. In a subsequent email, she sent me three covers with a note that she "didn't really like any of them," but her art director felt these were the best.

Attention spans are contracting, commercials are filtered, messages have a character limit, and the competitive landscape is increasingly cluttered. The greatest weapon we have is design. That was the topic of discussion during a recent AMA Baltimore event. At the event, Erik Hansen, creative director for Bates Creative, shared ways to think about building brand awareness by design. A term Hansen uses to describe this is "Designful Thinking.”

A brand new client asked me for a website redesign this week. My mind is immediately flooded with ideas about the hip, new banner, restructuring the content and navigation bar, freshening the color palette, cutting the text way back, etc. Simple enough, right? Wrong.

I recently survived the production of a 52-page conference program with an oversized, map-like insert. I and my assistant worked frantically around the clock the last few days making the editor's copious revisions to drafts six, seven, and eight to release this job to the printer today.
